Preseason Recap: Game 1

I know, it is only preseason but FOOTBALL IS BACK.

Lets look at a quick recap then I will get in more depth:

The first team offense and defense looked good. The front 7 looks like it is going to be a force to reckon with this season. The first team offense scored with ease thanks to a pair of first down catches made by the newly departed Jordan Matthews. The drive was capped off with a fantastic scramble by Wentz where he lead 4th round rookie Mack Hollins beautifully and Hollins stiff-armed the soul out of 2 poor Packers’ defenders as he scampered for the score. The corner backs did not look strong, though Patrick Robinson had a surprisingly good game after getting burnt every day in camp. The depth of our offensive line worries the shit out of me, we need to protect Wentz and if the injury bug strikes, that won’t bode well.

Key Players:

Alshon Jeffery- Jeffery did not suit up for the game but if it was the regular season he would have been a go, do not worry about him.

Torrey Smith- Torrey Smith did not record a single reception against the Packers but you were able to see the value he brings even when he is not the primary target. On the Mack Hollins touchdown, Torrey Smith was responsible for taking the top off and drawing the safety to the right side of the field, opening up the left for Mack-Attack to do work.

Bryce Treggs- 7 for 91, Treggs lead the game in catches and yards, he showed up. The young speedster is fighting an uphill battle to make the team but if he keeps performing like that, it will be hard for the coaches to not keep him around.

Mack Hollins– Hollins is responsible for the play every one is taking about. After running through the middle and making the catch, the rookie made not one but 2 impressive and aggressive stiff arms as he ran in for the score. He wants to be known as more than just a special teams ace and he looks like a virtual lock to make the team, it will be interesting to see how the coaches use him.

Nelson Agholor– The training camp darling was a non-factor in the first game, he was only really targeted on a failed 2-point conversion on an interesting call. Agholor has accomplished probably the rarest thing in sports, he managed to win over the fans after being the scapegoat for everything bad, that is impossible in Philadelphia, just ask every corner back since Asante Samuel.

Donnel Pumphrey- The certified playmaker had a hard time getting going against Green Bay. 4 carries for 5 yards and 5 catches for 12 yards, his roster spot his safe and he is not expected to play a huge role this year so it is good to get him experience.  I can not wait to see him and Sproles on the field at the same time this season.

Carson Wentz- I saved the best for last. Wentz was perfect on his passes, showed improved footwork, took care of the football and he shared the ball with everyone, the best he could do for one drive. His escapability (is that a word?) never ceases to amaze me, and it was on display during his touchdown play.

Derek Barnett- A first round pick that may pan out? say it aint so! Barnett in his first game-action man handled defenders, recording 2 sacks, 2 TFL, 2 QB hits and 4 total tackles. He is not expected to begin the season as the starter, but another game like this and he will be in the conversation.

Nate Gerry- A very interesting prospect. A safety that is trying his hand at Linebacker much like Deone Buchanon and Shaq Thompson, except that Gerry is more raw. From everything I have read about him in camp, he is picking everything up very well as he continues to impress teammates with his progress. In his first game he has made a couple nice plays and recorded 3 tackles, his development will be fun to watch

The Rest of the Front 7- The defensive line was responsible for constant pressure, lead by Brandon Graham and Fletcher Cox. Mychal Kendricks even contributed with an interception which was encouraging.

The Secondary- Patrick Robinson was solid all game, Jalen Mills and his finger wag was excellent, spending most of his snaps against Randall Cobb. Tre Sullivan nearly murdered a man, I saw all I need to, I am excited, it is football season.
