The expansion draft is underway and the Flyers have already received their first casualty in the form of French forward Pierre Bellemare.
Bellemare, who just turned 32 in March, has been with the Flyers’ organization since 2014. In March of this year, the coaches rewarded Bellemare by making him an Alternate Captain. It was a little confusing when he was not protected especially after just receiving the “A” but Hextall just simply did not view him in the long-term plans.
With this being the pick of the Vegas Golden Knights this is the best case scenario. The Golden Knights could have very easily taken Jordan Weal (free agent,) Michael Raffl, Matt Read, Michael Del Zotto, or Michael Neuvirth. Bellemare was a solid player throughout his few years in the Orange and Black but he was definitely one of the more expendable players on the roster. Getting rid of the 32 year old forward will open up a roster spot for one of our younger players.
We all know that the absolute best case scenario would be for the Golden Knights to take Andrew Macdonald, but we could not pay them enough to take that contract.
The NHL starts this Friday and lasts until Saturday, with the Flyers having the second overall pick, we are promised one of the top 2 forwards in the draft.
Thank you for your time in this city Bellemare and thank you for playing your heart out every single shift, good luck in Vegas!
